”Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out.“
Proverbs 20:5
There are several ideas being implied simultaneously in this passage.
The ideas all follow a similar route so let us begin with that route.
In this maxim the point is something is being drawn up from the deep and out into the light. This can be done by an individual through introspection, study, deliberate evaluation and honesty. It could also be completed with the assistance of another or others which are trusted sources which expose truth and assist in lifting the truth out of the deep and darkness which hide or conceal it.
But, what truths are being brought up and exposed?
We see the word, “counsel,” and assume that comes from a Counselor. However, this word also hold the ideas of a plan, purpose or advice. These ideas broaden the spectrum of the entire passage.
It could mean there is a purpose inside of you and as you grow in understanding you find ways to draw your purpose out. The idea holds merit as many people find a larger purpose and become more successful as they get older.
It could also allude to the necessity to find a solid support system. Putting yourself around people that will make you a better person is a basic tenant of Self improvement. If you place yourself around men of understanding they can draw out the good in you.
Another meaning or at least an indirect inference is to be selective who you are influenced by. “Men of understanding” may be good men or they may be deceitful. If you invest your time with Ne’re-do-wells or those with ulterior motives they will tend to draw out other things from the deep dark depths of the soul
